About DIY Project

Something in your house broke, or you want to make something with your own hands. DIY Project is here for that moment. We explain it the way a handy friend would, standing next to you.

Meet Edie

Edie is our mascot: a capable hen in an apron who has fixed a few faucets and glued a lot of googly eyes. You will see her next to tips around the site.

Who we are

We're a small editorial team. We write and edit every page on this site, and we sign them as the DIY Project team.

We're not a big media company, and we're not a contractor trying to sell you a job. We like fixing things. We like explaining them even more.

What the site is for

DIY Project covers two things. Fixes for the stuff that goes wrong at home, like a toilet that keeps running or a screw that spins in its hole. And things to make, from weekend wood projects to crafts with kids.

Every guide answers three questions on the first screen. Can I do this? What will it cost me? Will it work? Then we walk you through it one step at a time.

Our six promises

We tell you when not to. Some jobs belong to a licensed pro, like opening electrical boxes, working on gas lines, or disturbing asbestos or lead paint. When a fix crosses that line, we say so plainly and tell you who to call.

Cheapest fix first. If a butter knife and 10 minutes will do it, we lead with that. The upgrade comes second, and only if it's worth it.

Here's how we make money. Some links on the site go to retailers, and we may earn a small commission if you buy. Your price stays the same. Our How we make money page has the full story.

Bad hacks get called out. If a popular trick doesn't work, or works with a catch, we say it. Our verdicts are Works, Works with a catch, and Doesn't work.

Every step is checked. We check each step against manufacturer instructions and product labels before anything goes live.

Mistakes get fixed in public. When we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change and the date on the page. Our corrections page keeps a running log.

Nothing to hide

That's the whole idea behind the site. Bad news comes first. The downsides of every method are on the page, including the one we recommend.

We'll never invent people, reviews, test results, or numbers to sound more convincing. If we don't know something, we'll tell you that too.
