DIY Project

Disclaimer

We want you to finish the job with all ten fingers and no surprises. So here is what our guides can and can't do for you.

General information only

Everything on DIY Project is general information for home use. It is not professional, legal, electrical, plumbing, structural, medical or financial advice.

We can't see your house. A guide that fits most homes may not fit yours.

DIY carries risk

Tools cut, ladders slip, water and electricity don't mix. Read the full guide before you start, wear the protective gear it lists, and follow the maker's instructions for every tool and product.

If you're unsure at any point, stop. Calling a licensed pro is a perfectly good way to finish a job.

Codes and permits

Building, electrical and plumbing rules change from place to place. Check with your local building department before work that may need a permit. If you rent, check with your landlord first.

Kids' projects

Craft projects for children need adult supervision. Small parts are a choking risk for children under 3. Scissors, hot glue, ovens and anything with a cord are a job for the grown-up.

Prices, times and difficulty

Costs, times and difficulty levels are our best estimates. Yours will vary with where you live, what you already own and how the job goes.

Products and links

When we point to a type of product, it's because it suits the job. We don't guarantee any product, and the retailer or maker is responsible for it. Some links earn us a commission. See our affiliate disclosure.

Mistakes

We check our guides and we correct errors. If you spot one, tell us on the corrections page and we'll look at it.
