DIY Project

How we make money

You're reading a guide and there's a link to a $6 part. Fair question: does anyone get paid if you click it? Yes, sometimes. Here's exactly how it works.

The short version

Some links on DIY Project go to Amazon. If you click one and buy something, Amazon pays us a small commission.

As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases.

Prices on our pages are estimates to help you plan. The price you see on Amazon is the real one.

Your price stays the same

The commission comes out of the retailer's side. You pay the same price you'd pay if you went to the store's site on your own.

You never have to use our links. Every item on a shopping list has a plain name, so you can buy it anywhere you like, including the hardware store down the street.

How we pick products

We start with what the job needs. Then we pick the cheapest thing that works.

Our shopping lists start with what you probably already own. When a guide doesn't need you to buy anything, we say so loudly. That costs us money, and we're fine with it.

If there's a pricier upgrade worth knowing about, it comes second, and we say why it might be worth it. If it isn't worth it, we say that too.

Brands can't pay for placement

No brand can pay to be included in a guide, ranked higher, or called the best. Commission rates don't decide what we recommend.

If a product we link to stops being the right pick, we change the pick, even if the new one earns us less or nothing.

Sponsorships

We don't run sponsored content right now. If we ever take a sponsorship, it will be labeled clearly at the top of the page, in plain words, before you read anything else.

Why we do it this way

Running a site takes time and money. Affiliate links let us keep every guide free to read without paywalls or pop-ups asking you to subscribe.

We'd rather tell you this up front than have you wonder. That's the deal behind every page here. Nothing to hide.
