How to make it

Safety

If you plan to eat the eggs, keep them in the fridge and don't eat any that sat out more than 2 hours.

  1. Step 1: Boil the eggs

    Boil the eggs

Grown-up step: hard-boil the eggs and cool them in cold water. Keep them in the fridge until dye time.

  2. Step 2: Make the dyes
    2

    Make the dyes

Grown-up step: simmer each dye in its own pot with 2 cups of water for 20 to 30 minutes. Cabbage, turmeric and onion skins each get a pot.

  3. Step 3: Strain and cool
    3

    Strain and cool

Grown-up step: strain each dye into a jar and let it cool to room temperature. Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to each jar.

  4. Step 4: Dunk the eggs

    Dunk the eggs

Lower each egg into a jar with a spoon. Cabbage makes blue, turmeric makes yellow, onion skins make orange-brown.

  5. Step 5: Wait for color

    Wait for color

Check after 30 minutes. For deep blue, soak cabbage eggs in the fridge overnight.

  6. Step 6: Dry them

    Dry them

Lift them out and set them in the egg carton to dry. Rub with a dab of cooking oil for a soft shine.

Edie's tip

The cabbage dye looks purple in the jar and turns eggs blue. Kids love that surprise.
