How to make it

  1. Step 1: Ask the question
    1

    Ask the question

Write it down: which paper airplane design flies the farthest?

  2. Step 2: Make a guess
    2

    Make a guess

Write your hypothesis, your best guess and why. That's what judges look for first.

  3. Step 3: Fold 3 designs
    3

    Fold 3 designs

Fold a classic dart, a wide-wing glider and one of your own. Same paper for all 3.

  4. Step 4: Set up the runway
    4

    Set up the runway

Tape a start line on the floor in a long hallway or a gym. No wind, so stay indoors.

  5. Step 5: Fly and measure
    5

    Fly and measure

Throw each plane 5 times from the same spot with the same throw. Measure to where it first lands.

  6. Step 6: Average the results
    6

    Average the results

Add the 5 distances for each plane and divide by 5. Make a bar graph.

  7. Step 7: Explain what happened
    7

    Explain what happened

Write which won and why. Narrow darts cut through the air fast. Wide wings make more lift, so gliders float longer but slow down.

Edie's tip

Have the same person throw every time. Changing throwers changes the results.
