How to make it

Safety

Dry beans are a choking hazard and raw kidney beans are toxic to eat, so use lima or pinto and keep them out of mouths.

  1. Step 1: Stuff the jar
    1

    Stuff the jar

Have your child fold the paper towels and push them into the jar around the sides.

  2. Step 2: Wet the towels
    2

    Wet the towels

Pour in water until the towels are soaked. Tip out any extra.

  3. Step 3: Slide in the beans
    3

    Slide in the beans

Tuck the beans between the glass and the towel, halfway down, so you can see them.

  4. Step 4: Find a sunny spot

    Find a sunny spot

Set the jar on a windowsill.

  5. Step 5: Check every day
    5

    Check every day

Add a splash of water when the towel feels dry. Roots show up in about 3 to 5 days.

  6. Step 6: Draw what you see
    6

    Draw what you see

Draw the bean every few days to see how it changes.

Edie's tip

Soak the beans overnight first. They sprout faster.
