How to make it

  1. Step 1: Snip the straw
    1

    Snip the straw

Have your child cut short strips of yellow paper. Every snip is cutting practice, and wonky straw looks right.

  2. Step 2: Draw the face
    2

    Draw the face

Lay the bag flat with the folded bottom on top. Draw eyes, a nose and a big smile on the flap.

  3. Step 3: Glue on the straw
    3

    Glue on the straw

Glue the yellow strips along the top edge of the flap so they stick out like hair.

  4. Step 4: Cut a hat
    4

    Cut a hat

Cut a triangle or a rectangle hat from colored paper and glue it over the straw.

  5. Step 5: Add patches
    5

    Add patches

Glue small paper squares on the body of the bag. Draw stitches around them with a marker.

  6. Step 6: Start the show
    6

    Start the show

Slide a hand inside, fingers in the flap, and make your scarecrow talk.

Edie's tip

Draw straight lines on the yellow paper first. Cutting along a line is a skill preschoolers are still building.
