How to make it

  1. Step 1: Trace the shapes
    1

    Trace the shapes

Trace 30 butterflies in 3 sizes. Mixing sizes makes the cluster look real.

  2. Step 2: Cut them out
    2

    Cut them out

Cut slowly around the wings. Smooth curves look better than fast jagged ones.

  3. Step 3: Fold the bodies
    3

    Fold the bodies

Fold each butterfly in half down the middle. Open it so the wings stand up at an angle.

  4. Step 4: Plan the swoop
    4

    Plan the swoop

Lay them on the floor in a curve, big ones at one end and small ones trailing off.

  5. Step 5: Stick them up
    5

    Stick them up

Press a pea of putty behind the fold of each one. Copy your floor layout onto the wall.

Edie's tip

Glossy or metallic cardstock catches window light and makes the wings shimmer.
