How to make it
Wear eye and hearing protection while cutting, and pre-drill near board ends since cedar splits fast.
1Cut the 2x4s
Cut 4 legs at 35 1/4 in, 4 long rails at 47 1/2 in and 4 side rails at 17 in. Two legs and a side rail come from each of 2 boards.
2Cut the 1x6s
Cut 5 top slats at 47 1/2 in and 7 shelf slats at 27 in.
3Build the side frames
Lay 2 legs flat, 17 in apart. Glue and screw a side rail between them flush with the tops, then another 8 in up from the bottom. Build the second side.
4Join the sides
Stand the sides up. Screw long rails across the front and back faces of the legs at both rail heights, ends flush with the legs.
5Check for square
Measure both diagonals of the top. Push the frame until they match, then tighten every screw.
6Lay the work surface
Screw 5 slats across the top rails, butted tight, starting flush with the front edge. Use two 1 1/4 in screws at each rail.
7Lay the lower shelf
Lay the 27 in slats front to back across the 2 low long rails, fitted between the legs. Space them about 1/3 in apart and screw each end down.
8Check and place
Rock it to check for wobble and tighten anything loose. Set it on pavers and line up your pots.
Set the bench on pavers or bricks. Cedar legs last years longer when their ends stay off wet soil.
