How to make it

  1. Step 1: Hoop the fabric
    1

    Hoop the fabric

Loosen the hoop, lay the fabric over the inner ring and press the outer ring on. Tighten until it sounds like a drum when tapped.

  2. Step 2: Draw the flowers
    2

    Draw the flowers

Sketch a few stems and little blooms with the pen. Keep shapes small and loose.

  3. Step 3: Stitch the stems
    3

    Stitch the stems

Split the floss to 3 strands. Backstitch each stem: come up ahead, go back down at the end of the last stitch.

  4. Step 4: Make the petals
    4

    Make the petals

Use a lazy daisy stitch. Make a small loop and tack its tip down with a tiny stitch.

  5. Step 5: Add French knots
    5

    Add French knots

Wrap the floss twice around the needle, push it back in beside where it came up and pull slowly. These are your flower centers.

  6. Step 6: Remove the lines
    6

    Remove the lines

Dab any visible pen marks with a damp cotton swab. They vanish.

  7. Step 7: Finish the back
    7

    Finish the back

Trim the fabric to 1 in past the hoop. Run a loose stitch around the edge and pull it snug so it tucks behind.

Edie's tip

Keep your thread about as long as your forearm. Longer pieces tangle and fray.
