How to make it

  1. Step 1: Cut the pieces
    1

    Cut the pieces

    For each cover, cut 1 front at 19 x 19 in and 2 backs at 19 x 14 in.

  2. Step 2: Hem the backs
    2

    Hem the backs

On one long edge of each back, fold 1/2 in, press, fold 1/2 in again and press. Stitch it down.

  3. Step 3: Stack the layers
    3

    Stack the layers

Lay the front right side up. Lay one back on top, right side down, raw edges lined up. Lay the second back on the other side, overlapping the first.

  4. Step 4: Pin it
    4

Pin all the way around. The 2 hemmed edges overlap by about 7 in in the middle.

  5. Step 5: Sew around
    5

    Sew around

Stitch all 4 sides with a 1/2 in seam. Backstitch where the backs overlap, since that spot takes strain.

  6. Step 6: Clip and turn
    6

    Clip and turn

Clip the corners close to the stitching. Turn it right side out and poke the corners square.

  7. Step 7: Stuff it
    7

    Stuff it

Press it flat and push the insert in through the back. Fluff and toss it on the couch.

Edie's tip

Use a 20 in insert in an 18 in cover. The overfill makes pillows look full and expensive.
