How to make it
1Pick your palette
Choose 3 colors that already live in the room, like a pillow, rug or curtain. Add white to make lighter versions of each.
2Block in big shapes
Paint 3 or 4 large loose shapes with the 2 in brush. Let them run off the edges. Fill the whole canvas so no white shows.
3Let it dry
Wait 20 minutes until it's dry to the touch. Go make a coffee.
4Add a second layer
Paint smaller shapes over the first layer in a lighter or darker shade. Leave some of the first layer peeking through.
5Drag on texture
Scoop a little paint onto the palette knife and drag it across a few spots. Thick ridges catch the light.
6Add one accent
Use the angled brush for one thin line or a few dots in your boldest color. Stop there. Less is the secret.
7Paint the edges
Run a solid color around all 4 sides so it looks finished without a frame.
8Seal it
Wait 24 hours, then brush on a thin coat of varnish. Hang it and enjoy your new focal wall.
Squint at the canvas from across the room every 15 minutes. It shows you where it feels too busy or too empty.
