How to make it

  1. Step 1: Add a pebble layer
    1

    Add a pebble layer

Pour about 1 in of pebbles into each jar. Extra water drains into this space instead of the roots.

  2. Step 2: Check the fit
    2

    Check the fit

Set a nursery pot inside each jar. The pot should sit on the pebbles with its rim near the jar's mouth.

  3. Step 3: Leave the plant potted
    3

    Leave the plant potted

Keep each herb in its plastic pot with drainage holes. Mason jars have none, so this is what keeps roots healthy.

  4. Step 4: Label the jars
    4

    Label the jars

Write each herb's name on a label and stick it on the glass.

  5. Step 5: Find the sun
    5

    Find the sun

Line them up on a window that gets at least 6 hours of light a day.

  6. Step 6: Water the smart way
    6

    Water the smart way

Lift the pot out, water it in the sink and let it drain. Set it back in the jar.

Edie's tip

Pinch basil right above a pair of leaves when you harvest. It grows 2 new stems from that spot and gets bushier.
