How to make it

Safety

Raw dry beans aren't safe to eat, so keep them out of little mouths.

  1. Step 1: Soak the beans
    1

    Soak the beans

Soak the beans in water overnight. They'll swell up.

  2. Step 2: Stuff the jar
    2

    Stuff the jar

Crumple wet paper towels and pack them into the jar.

  3. Step 3: Tuck in the beans
    3

    Tuck in the beans

Slide the beans between the towel and the glass, about halfway down, so you can see them.

  4. Step 4: Keep it damp
    4

    Keep it damp

Set the jar somewhere bright but out of hot sun. Add a splash of water whenever the towel feels dry.

  5. Step 5: Watch and draw
    5

    Watch and draw

Draw the beans every day. A root comes out first and grows down. Then a shoot grows up.

  6. Step 6: Talk about why
    6

    Talk about why

The bean has a baby plant and food packed inside. Water wakes it up. Roots grow toward gravity, and the shoot grows the other way toward light.

Edie's tip

Turn the jar upside down once a root shows. Watch it bend back down in a day or two.
