How to make it

Safety

Raw egg can carry salmonella, so wash hands after touching it and throw it out when you're done.

  1. Step 1: Drop in the egg
    1

    Drop in the egg

Set a raw egg gently in the glass. Pour in vinegar until it's covered.

  2. Step 2: Watch the bubbles
    2

    Watch the bubbles

Look close. Tiny bubbles form on the shell right away.

  3. Step 3: Change the vinegar
    3

    Change the vinegar

After 1 day, scoop the egg out with a spoon. Pour in fresh vinegar and put the egg back.

  4. Step 4: Wait 1 to 2 more days

Leave it until no shell is left. It'll look bigger and a bit see-through.

  5. Step 5: Rinse and feel

    Rinse and feel

Rinse it gently. Feel the rubbery skin. Bounce it 1 in above a plate and see if it holds.

  6. Step 6: Talk about why

    Talk about why

Eggshell is made of calcium carbonate. Vinegar's acid breaks it apart, and that makes the carbon dioxide bubbles. The thin skin under the shell is left behind.

Edie's tip

Shine a flashlight through the egg in a dark room. You can see the yolk inside.
