How to make it

  1. Step 1: Cut 2 rectangles
    1

    Cut 2 rectangles

Cut a 3 in by 8 in rectangle from each color. Fold each one in half so it is 3 in by 4 in.

  2. Step 2: Round the tops
    2

    Round the tops

Round off the open end of each folded piece like the top of a thumb.

  3. Step 3: Cut the slits
    3

    Cut the slits

From the folded edge, cut 2 slits 3 in long. Now each piece has 3 fingers still joined at the top.

  4. Step 4: Weave the first finger
    4

    Weave the first finger

Hold the pieces at a right angle. Weave the first finger of one through, then around, then through the fingers of the other.

  5. Step 5: Weave the rest
    5

    Weave the rest

Do the next finger the opposite way: around, through, around. It feels tight. Go slowly and it will slide.

  6. Step 6: Check the basket
    6

    Check the basket

Gently open the heart. If it opens like a pocket, you did it right.

  7. Step 7: Add a handle
    7

    Add a handle

Glue a ribbon strip inside the top edges. Fill it with candy canes or a note.

Edie's tip

Practice with 2 colors of junk mail first. The weave makes sense after one try.
