How to make it

Safety

Cloves are a small, sharp choking hazard, so stay at the table with anyone who may put them in their mouth.

  1. Step 1: Mark a pattern

Stretch a rubber band around the orange as a guide for a straight line.

  2. Step 2: Poke the holes

Press a skewer into the peel along the band, about a quarter inch apart.

  3. Step 3: Push in cloves

Push a clove into each hole, stem first.

  4. Step 4: Make more lines

Move the band and repeat. Spirals, stripes or random dots all look lovely.

  5. Step 5: Display them

    Display them

Pile them in a bowl or tie a ribbon around one to hang.

Edie's tip

Pre-poking the holes means cloves slide in with almost no pressure, which is kind to arthritic fingers. The familiar Christmas smell often sparks stories.
