How to make it

Safety

Use oven mitts to turn the slices, and keep the garland away from candles and heaters.

  1. Step 1: Slice the oranges
    1

    Slice the oranges

Cut the oranges into rounds about a quarter inch thick. A helper can do this part.

  2. Step 2: Blot them dry
    2

    Blot them dry

Press each slice between paper towels. Less juice means faster drying.

  3. Step 3: Lay them out
    3

    Lay them out

Set the slices on a rack on the baking sheet in one layer.

  4. Step 4: Dry in a low oven
    4

    Dry in a low oven

Bake at 200 F for about 3 hours, turning every hour. They're done when they feel leathery, not sticky.

  5. Step 5: Cool them
    5

    Cool them

Let them cool on the rack for 30 minutes. They firm up as they cool.

  6. Step 6: String the garland
    6

    String the garland

Thread the needle with twine. Push it through each slice near the top, adding bay leaves between.

Edie's tip

A serrated bread knife or an electric knife cuts oranges with much less grip strength than a chef's knife.
