How to make it

  1. Step 1: Draw the design
    1

    Draw the design

Draw a simple flower, heart or short word on the fabric with the water-soluble pen.

  2. Step 2: Fit the hoop
    2

    Fit the hoop

Put the fabric between the 2 rings. Tighten the screw until it's drum-tight.

  3. Step 3: Thread the needle
    3

    Thread the needle

Cut an arm's length of floss and thread it with the threader. Knot the end.

  4. Step 4: Backstitch the lines
    4

    Backstitch the lines

Come up, go back one stitch length, come up again ahead. Follow the drawn line.

  5. Step 5: Fill the petals
    5

    Fill the petals

Use long, straight stitches side by side for petals and leaves.

  6. Step 6: Wash out the pen
    6

    Wash out the pen

Dab the leftover pen lines with a damp cloth.

  7. Step 7: Finish the back
    7

    Finish the back

Trim the fabric to 1 in around the hoop and glue or gather it at the back.

Edie's tip

Use all 6 strands of floss. Thick thread is easier to see, fills faster and forgives uneven stitches. A hoop stand frees both hands.
