How to make it

Safety

Sew every add-on on very firmly and skip small beads, since people with dementia may put things in their mouth.

  1. Step 1: Cast on
    1

    Cast on

Cast on 40 stitches with 2 strands of yarn held together.

  2. Step 2: Knit the outside
    2

    Knit the outside

Knit every row, or knit 2 purl 2, until the piece is about 11 in long.

  3. Step 3: Knit the inside
    3

    Knit the inside

Switch to a softer yarn and keep going for another 11 in. This becomes the lining.

  4. Step 4: Bind off
    4

    Bind off

Bind off loosely. You'll have one long rectangle.

  5. Step 5: Sew on the extras
    5

    Sew on the extras

Stitch buttons, ribbon loops and the bead cord onto both halves. Sew through each one 8 to 10 times.

  6. Step 6: Fold and seam
    6

    Fold and seam

Fold the inside half up into the outside half to make a tube. Sew the long edge closed.

  7. Step 7: Tug-test everything
    7

    Tug-test everything

Pull hard on every button and ribbon. Restitch anything that moves.

Edie's tip

If knitting is hard on your hands now, make the muff on a large round loom instead. The extras are sewn on the same way.
