How to make it

Safety

Leave out anything sharp, breakable or small enough to swallow.

  1. Step 1: Cover the lid

Wrap the lid in paper or fabric like a present. Tape the edges inside.

  2. Step 2: Add a name label
    2

    Add a name label

Write the person's name in big, dark letters on a card. Glue it on top.

  3. Step 3: Copy the photos
    3

    Copy the photos

Print copies so the originals stay safe. Make them postcard size or bigger.

  4. Step 4: Choose the treasures
    4

    Choose the treasures

Pick things tied to happy times: a wedding, a job, a hobby, a favorite place.

  5. Step 5: Write short labels
    5

    Write short labels

On the back of each photo, write who, where and roughly when. It helps visitors join in.

  6. Step 6: Open it together
    6

    Open it together

Take things out one at a time. Let the person lead the story.

Edie's tip

Ask "Tell me about this" instead of "Do you remember?" It invites a story without making anyone feel tested.
