How to make it

Safety

Skip loose beads, bells, cords longer than 6 in and anything small enough to swallow, since some people with dementia put objects in their mouth.

  1. Step 1: Plan the layout
    1

    Plan the layout

Lay the top fabric flat. Arrange the textures and fasteners on it until it looks balanced. Take a phone photo of it.

  2. Step 2: Sew on the textures
    2

    Sew on the textures

Stitch each fabric square down around all 4 edges. Keep every edge flat so nothing catches.

  3. Step 3: Add the zipper
    3

    Add the zipper

Sew the zipper over a small fabric pocket so it opens and closes on something.

  4. Step 4: Attach the buttons
    4

    Attach the buttons

Sew each big button on very firmly, going through 8 to 10 times. Add a fabric flap with a buttonhole next to one.

  5. Step 5: Stitch the ribbons
    5

    Stitch the ribbons

Sew ribbon loops in place at both ends so nothing dangles loose.

  6. Step 6: Join front and back
    6

    Join front and back

Pin the 2 fabrics right sides together. Sew around the edge, leaving a 6 in gap.

  7. Step 7: Turn and close
    7

    Turn and close

Pull it right side out through the gap. Stitch the gap shut and sew a line around the whole edge.

Edie's tip

Tug every button and ribbon hard when you're done. If you can pull it loose, so can someone else, so sew it again.
