How to make it

  1. Step 1: Cut the strands
    1

    Cut the strands

Wrap yarn around the cardboard 20 times. Cut along one edge to get even strands.

  2. Step 2: Fold a strand
    2

    Fold a strand

Fold 2 or 3 strands in half to make a loop.

  3. Step 3: Knot onto the dowel
    3

    Knot onto the dowel

Lay the loop over the dowel. Pull the tails through the loop and tug snug. That's a lark's head knot.

  4. Step 4: Fill the dowel
    4

    Fill the dowel

Keep adding strands side by side, changing color as you go.

  5. Step 5: Trim the shape
    5

    Trim the shape

Lay it flat and trim the bottom into a V or a curve.

  6. Step 6: Add a hanger
    6

    Add a hanger

Tie a length of yarn to both ends of the dowel and hang it.

Edie's tip

Tape the dowel to the table edge while you work so it doesn't roll. Then both hands are free for knotting.
