How to make it

Safety

Push the awl into a cutting board or old magazine, never toward your hand.

  1. Step 1: Fold the signatures
    1

    Fold the signatures

Fold the sheets in half. Nest them into 8 stacks of 5. Each stack is a signature.

  2. Step 2: Make a hole guide
    2

    Make a hole guide

Mark 4 dots along a folded scrap, 1 in from each end and 2 evenly in the middle.

  3. Step 3: Punch the holes
    3

    Punch the holes

Line the guide in each fold. Poke through with the awl.

  4. Step 4: Cover the boards
    4

    Cover the boards

Glue paper over each chipboard. Punch matching holes 1/4 in from the spine edge.

  5. Step 5: Sew the first signature
    5

    Sew the first signature

Sew from inside the first stack out to the cover, loop around and back in.

  6. Step 6: Chain the rest
    6

    Chain the rest

Add each stack by looping the thread under the stitch below before going back inside.

  7. Step 7: Attach the back cover
    7

    Attach the back cover

Sew the last stack to the back board the same way. Knot inside.

Edie's tip

Watch a slow coptic stitch video once before you start. The loop makes sense the second you see it.
