How to make it

Safety

Drill acrylic slowly so it doesn't crack, and wear safety glasses.

  1. Step 1: Draw the design
    1

    Draw the design

Sketch your cloud or word on paper. Keep curves wide since the rope won't bend sharp corners.

  2. Step 2: Trace onto the acrylic
    2

    Trace onto the acrylic

Leave the protective film on. Lay it over your drawing and trace with marker.

  3. Step 3: Mark the tie holes
    3

    Mark the tie holes

Dot pairs of holes about 1/4 in apart, on either side of the line, every 2 in.

  4. Step 4: Drill the holes
    4

    Drill the holes

Grown-up step: drill each dot slowly with the acrylic clamped on scrap wood.

  5. Step 5: Shape the light
    5

    Shape the light

Peel the film. Bend the neon rope along the line and zip-tie it through each pair of holes.

  6. Step 6: Trim and hang
    6

    Trim and hang

Snip the zip tie tails flush. Hang it with picture strips and plug it into a USB block.

Edie's tip

Start the rope at the end nearest your outlet so the cord trails off clean.
