How to make it

  1. Step 1: Wash the tote
    1

    Wash the tote

Wash and dry it first. New canvas has a coating that blocks paint.

  2. Step 2: Slip in cardboard
    2

    Slip in cardboard

Slide cardboard inside so paint doesn't soak through to the back.

  3. Step 3: Sketch your design
    3

    Sketch your design

Draw lightly in pencil. Simple shapes and big letters read best from far away.

  4. Step 4: Paint it
    4

    Paint it

Fill the shapes with thin coats. Let each coat dry 20 minutes.

  5. Step 5: Let it cure
    5

    Let it cure

Leave it flat for 24 hours.

  6. Step 6: Heat set it
    6

    Heat set it

Turn it inside out and iron on high for 3 minutes. Now it's washable.

Edie's tip

Outline everything in black paint pen at the end. It makes any drawing look sharper.
