How to make it

Safety

Check the oven with a thermometer, since overheated clay gives off fumes, and keep clay tools out of the kitchen.

  1. Step 1: Warm the clay
    1

    Warm the clay

Knead each block in your hands until soft. Cold clay cracks.

  2. Step 2: Roll it flat
    2

    Roll it flat

Roll to about 1/8 in thick. Put 2 stacked playing cards on each side as guides.

  3. Step 3: Cut the shapes
    3

    Cut the shapes

Press cutters straight down. Wiggle them a little to release.

  4. Step 4: Poke the holes
    4

    Poke the holes

Make a hole near the top of each piece with a toothpick.

  5. Step 5: Bake them
    5

    Bake them

Grown-up step: bake on parchment at the temperature on the package, usually 275°F for 15 to 30 minutes.

  6. Step 6: Sand the edges
    6

    Sand the edges

Once cool, sand any rough edges under running water.

  7. Step 7: Add the hardware
    7

    Add the hardware

Open a jump ring, hook it through the clay and earring hook, then close it.

Edie's tip

Wipe your hands with a baby wipe between colors. White clay picks up everything.
