How to make it

Safety

Keep the rug on a non-slip pad, especially on wood floors and near stairs.

  1. Step 1: Make the first pom-pom
    1

    Make the first pom-pom

Wrap yarn around both arms of the pom-pom maker until it's packed. Close it and cut around the middle.

  2. Step 2: Tie it tight
    2

    Tie it tight

Knot a 10 in piece of yarn around the center as tight as you can. Leave the ends long.

  3. Step 3: Trim it round
    3

    Trim it round

Pop it off and trim any long strands. Save the clippings for stuffing.

  4. Step 4: Make a lot more
    4

    Make a lot more

Make about 70 for a rug this size. Put on a show and get a friend to help.

  5. Step 5: Tie them on
    5

    Tie them on

Thread each pom-pom's long ties through the grid. Double-knot them on the back.

  6. Step 6: Pack them close
    6

    Pack them close

Space them so they squish together. Gaps show the grid.

  7. Step 7: Add the pad
    7

    Add the pad

Lay the rug on a non-slip pad so it doesn't slide.

Edie's tip

A 3 in pom-pom takes about 15 minutes. Plan for 2 or 3 movie nights.
