How to make it

Safety

Tape over the mirror edge if it's sharp, and lean it on a dresser instead of hanging it if it's heavy.

  1. Step 1: Roll fat coils
    1

    Roll fat coils

Roll clay into snakes about as thick as your thumb.

  2. Step 2: Wrap the edge
    2

    Wrap the edge

Press a coil around the mirror's rim, covering about 1/2 in of glass. Smooth seams with a wet finger.

  3. Step 3: Add the waves
    3

    Add the waves

Push the outside of the coil into bumps and curves. Make it as wild or tidy as you like.

  4. Step 4: Let it dry
    4

    Let it dry

Leave it flat for 48 hours. Little cracks might show. Normal.

  5. Step 5: Fix and sand
    5

    Fix and sand

Fill cracks with a dab of wet clay. Sand any rough spots once dry.

  6. Step 6: Paint and seal
    6

    Paint and seal

Paint 2 coats. Seal with a matte top coat so it doesn't chip.

Edie's tip

Brush a thin line of glue on the mirror edge before adding clay. Air-dry clay can pop off glass.
