How to make it

Safety

Keep the heat gun moving and away from the plastic cups and sheeting.

  1. Step 1: Cover everything
    1

    Cover everything

Lay plastic over the table and set 4 cups upside down to hold the canvas. Paint will drip off all sides.

  2. Step 2: Mix each color
    2

    Mix each color

Mix each paint with pouring medium in its own cup, about 1 part paint to 2 parts medium. Add water until it flows like warm honey.

  3. Step 3: Add silicone
    3

    Add silicone

Stir 2 drops of silicone oil into a couple of colors if you want cells.

  4. Step 4: Layer one cup
    4

    Layer one cup

Pour each color into one big cup, one on top of another. Don't stir.

  5. Step 5: Flip the cup
    5

    Flip the cup

Set the canvas over the cup, hold both and flip them together. Lift the cup and watch the paint spread.

  6. Step 6: Tilt the canvas
    6

    Tilt the canvas

Tilt slowly in every direction until paint covers the edges. Pass a heat gun over it to pop bubbles and open cells.

  7. Step 7: Let it dry flat
    7

    Let it dry flat

Set it on the cups, level, somewhere dust-free. Leave it 2 to 3 days.

Edie's tip

Check the canvas with a level before it dries. Pours keep sliding for hours on a tilted surface.
