How to make it
Call 811 before digging, work from a steady ladder with a helper when cutting posts and lifting beams, and wear eye and hearing protection.
1Call 811
Call 811 at least a few business days before digging. They'll mark buried lines for free.
2Lay out the posts
Stake 4 post spots. Inside faces sit 48 in apart across the path, and outside faces sit 24 in apart front to back. Measure both diagonals and adjust until they match.
3Dig and set
Dig each hole 8 in wide and 28 in deep, then add 4 in of gravel. Set the posts, check plumb on 2 faces and brace them with stakes.
4Pour the concrete
Fill around each post with concrete mix and water as the bag directs. Recheck plumb and let it set for the time on the bag.
5Level the tops
Mark a level line on all 4 posts at the height of the shortest one. Cut them off with the circular saw from a steady ladder, with a helper.
6Bolt on the beams
Clamp a 2x6 beam across the outside of each pair of posts, flush with the tops and overhanging evenly. Drill through and bolt each one.
7Add the rafters
Cut 5 rafters at 42 in. Stand them on edge across both beams, spaced evenly, and fasten each with 3 in structural screws.
8Slat the sides
Cut 12 slats at 24 in from the 2x2s. Screw 6 across each side every 12 in, starting 12 in off the ground. Plant your climber at the base.
Leave the cedar unfinished if you like the silver look. It weathers gray in a season and lasts years without stain.
