How to make it

Safety

Wear safety glasses while cutting and nailing, and hang the house away from doorways so bees have a quiet flight path.

  1. Step 1: Cut the pieces
    1

    Cut the pieces

Cut a bottom at 5 in, 2 sides at 8 in, a top at 8 in and a back at 9 in.

  2. Step 2: Build the box
    2

    Build the box

Nail the 2 sides onto the ends of the bottom, making a U. Nail the top across the sides so it overhangs a little on each side.

  3. Step 3: Add the back
    3

    Add the back

Nail the back onto the back edges. The open front faces out.

  4. Step 4: Pack the tubes
    4

    Pack the tubes

Fill the box with nesting tubes, open ends facing out, pushed all the way to the back. The deep box shades them from rain.

  5. Step 5: Hang it
    5

    Hang it

Screw it to a wall or post 3 to 6 ft up, facing east or southeast for morning sun. Put it up in early spring before fruit trees bloom.

  6. Step 6: Offer mud
    6

    Offer mud

Keep a patch of bare, damp soil nearby. Mason bees seal their tubes with mud.

Edie's tip

Replace the tubes every year. Drilled wood blocks can't be cleaned and pass mites from season to season.
