How to make it

  1. Step 1: Add the drainage layer
    1

    Add the drainage layer

Pour 1 in of pebbles into the jar. Extra water collects here, away from roots.

  2. Step 2: Lay the mesh
    2

    Lay the mesh

Cut mesh to cover the pebbles. It stops soil from sinking into the drainage layer.

  3. Step 3: Add soil
    3

    Add soil

Sprinkle on a little charcoal, then 2 in of soil. Slope it higher at the back.

  4. Step 4: Plant
    4

    Plant

Dig small holes with a spoon and settle each plant in, tallest at the back. Press soil firm around them.

  5. Step 5: Lay the moss
    5

    Lay the moss

Tuck moss around the plants with tweezers. Press it down so it touches soil.

  6. Step 6: Mist and close
    6

    Mist and close

Mist 5 or 6 times and close the lid. Put it in bright, indirect light.

  7. Step 7: Watch the weather
    7

    Watch the weather

A little fog on the glass in the morning is normal. If it stays fogged all day, open the lid for an hour.

Edie's tip

Keep it out of direct sun. Closed glass heats up like a car in summer.
