How to make it

Safety

Check the oven often near the end so the slices don't scorch, and use oven mitts on the hot racks.

  1. Step 1: Slice the oranges
    1

    Slice the oranges

Cut them into rounds 1/4 in thick. Even slices dry at the same speed.

  2. Step 2: Blot them dry
    2

    Blot them dry

Press each slice between kitchen towels to soak up juice. Less juice means less oven time.

  3. Step 3: Set the oven low
    3

    Set the oven low

Heat the oven to 200 F. Lay the slices on racks set over parchment-lined sheets.

  4. Step 4: Bake and flip
    4

    Bake and flip

Bake 2 1/2 to 4 hours, flipping every 45 minutes. They're done when dry to the touch and slightly see-through.

  5. Step 5: Cool them
    5

    Cool them

Let them cool on the racks. They crisp up more as they cool.

  6. Step 6: String the garland
    6

    String the garland

Thread twine through each slice near the rind. Tie in a cinnamon stick and a bay leaf between every 2 slices.

  7. Step 7: Hang it
    7

    Hang it

Drape it on the tree, a mantel or a window and watch the light come through.

Edie's tip

Store it in a paper bag with a silica packet after the holidays. It keeps for next year if it stays dry.
