How to make it

  1. Step 1: Cut the cords
    1

    Cut the cords

Cut 16 cords, each 12 ft long. Fold each one in half.

  2. Step 2: Hang the dowel
    2

    Hang the dowel

Tie the hanging cord to both ends of the dowel. Hang it at eye level so you can work standing up.

  3. Step 3: Attach with lark's head knots
    3

    Attach with lark's head knots

Drape each folded cord's loop over the dowel, then pull the tails through the loop. You'll have 32 strands hanging.

  4. Step 4: Tie a row of square knots
    4

Tie a row of square knots

Work in groups of 4 strands. Cross the left strand over the middle 2 and under the right, then reverse. Tie a row across, about 2 in below the dowel.

  5. Step 5: Make the alternating rows
    5

    Make the alternating rows

Skip the first 2 strands and tie square knots with the next groups of 4. Alternate each row to build a net pattern.

  6. Step 6: Add a half hitch line
    6

    Add a half hitch line

Hold the far left strand across all the others at a slant. Wrap each strand around it twice to make a raised diagonal line.

  7. Step 7: Trim the fringe
    7

    Trim the fringe

Comb out the ends and cut them straight or in a V. Step back to check it hangs even.

Edie's tip

Cut cords longer than you think. Running short mid-row is the one mistake you can't undo.
