How to make it

Safety

Wear eye and hearing protection while cutting, and lean it where kids won't climb it, since it isn't built for weight.

  1. Step 1: Cut the rungs
    1

    Cut the rungs

Cut 4 rungs from the dowels, each 18 in long.

  2. Step 2: Mark the rails
    2

    Mark the rails

Clamp both rails side by side. Mark rung centers across both at 12, 28, 44 and 60 in from the bottom, centered on the wide face.

  3. Step 3: Drill the holes
    3

    Drill the holes

Drill each hole 1 in deep with the 1 1/4 in bit. Tape the bit as a depth flag and keep the drill straight.

  4. Step 4: Sand it all
    4

    Sand it all

Sand the rails and rungs with 80, then 120 grit. Round the rail corners so blankets don't snag.

  5. Step 5: Dry fit
    5

    Dry fit

Push the rungs into one rail, then press the other rail on. Tap with a mallet if it's tight.

  6. Step 6: Glue it up
    6

    Glue it up

Pull it apart, add glue to each hole and reassemble. Pin each rung from the back edge with a nail or screw.

  7. Step 7: Finish it
    7

    Finish it

Stain and topcoat once the glue dries. Lean it on a wall and drape on your coziest throws.

Edie's tip

Glue a small felt pad to the top ends of the rails. It protects the wall and stops slipping.
