How to make it

Safety

Wear safety glasses and hearing protection at the saw, and keep your hands at least 6 in from the blade on these short pieces.

  1. Step 1: Cut the blocks
    1

    Cut the blocks

Cut the 2x4 into pieces 3 1/2 in, 5 in and 7 in long. Mix the sizes so groups look natural.

  2. Step 2: Sand the edges
    2

    Sand the edges

Round every edge and corner with 80 grit, then smooth with 120. Softer edges read as pumpkin, not lumber.

  3. Step 3: Paint them
    3

    Paint them

Brush on 2 coats of paint, letting the first dry 30 minutes. Paint the ends too.

  4. Step 4: Distress a little
    4

    Distress a little

Rub the edges with 120 grit once the paint is dry. Bits of wood showing through look rustic.

  5. Step 5: Add stems
    5

    Add stems

Snip twigs about 1 1/2 in long and glue one on top of each block.

  6. Step 6: Tie on twine
    6

    Tie on twine

Wrap twine around the stem 3 times, knot it and glue a faux leaf under the bow.

Edie's tip

Ask the lumber desk to cut the 2x4 into rough lengths. Most stores do a few cuts free, and it fits in your car.
