How to make it

Safety

Use only tea lights in metal or glass cups, never leave a lit candle alone, and avoid pressure-treated lumber indoors.

  1. Step 1: Cut 3 blocks
    1

    Cut 3 blocks

Cut blocks at 4, 6 and 8 in from the 4x4.

  2. Step 2: Find the centers
    2

    Find the centers

Draw corner-to-corner lines on the top of each block. Where they cross is your center.

  3. Step 3: Test the bit
    3

    Test the bit

Drill a test hole in scrap and drop in a tea light. Go up to a 1 5/8 in bit if it's snug.

  4. Step 4: Drill the holes
    4

    Drill the holes

Clamp each block and drill 5/8 in deep at a slow speed. Back the bit out often to clear chips.

  5. Step 5: Sand and stain
    5

    Sand and stain

Round the edges with 80 grit, smooth with 120 and wipe on stain.

  6. Step 6: Wax and wait
    6

    Wax and wait

Buff in paste wax. Let the finish cure 48 hours before lighting, since fresh finish is flammable.

  7. Step 7: Add pads and lights
    7

    Add pads and lights

Stick felt pads on the bottoms and drop in the tea lights.

Edie's tip

Use LED tea lights for markets and gifts. People leave them on the table all evening without worry.
