How to make it

Safety

Cut corks on a board with the knife moving away from your hand, since wet corks can roll.

  1. Step 1: Soften the corks
    1

    Soften the corks

Steam the corks over a pot of simmering water for 10 minutes. Soft corks cut cleanly instead of crumbling.

  2. Step 2: Cut them in half
    2

    Cut them in half

Stand each cork on the board and saw it in half lengthwise with the bread knife. Keep your fingers clear of the blade path.

  3. Step 3: Plan the pattern
    3

    Plan the pattern

Lay the halves flat side down on the backing in a herringbone or rows. Trim end pieces to fit the edges.

  4. Step 4: Glue them down

    Glue them down

Glue each half in place, working from the center out.

  5. Step 5: Frame it
    5

    Frame it

Set the backing into the frame and close the clips. Pin up your first to-do list.

Edie's tip

Ask a local wine bar for corks. Many save them and are happy to hand over a bag.
