How to make it

Safety

Epsom salt isn't a snack, so no tasting, and wash hands after.

  1. Step 1: Pour the water
    1

    Pour the water

Grown-up step: run the tap as hot as it goes and fill the glass with 1/2 cup.

  2. Step 2: Stir in the salt
    2

    Stir in the salt

Add the Epsom salt and stir for about 1 minute. Some grains may stay at the bottom. That's fine.

  3. Step 3: Add color

    Add color

Add 1 or 2 drops of food coloring and stir once.

  4. Step 4: Chill it

    Chill it

Put the glass in the fridge overnight. Don't wiggle it.

  5. Step 5: Check in the morning
    5

    Check in the morning

Look for long needle crystals across the cup. Pour off the leftover water to see them.

  6. Step 6: Talk about why

    Talk about why

Hot water holds more dissolved salt than cold water. As it cools, the extra salt has to come out. It lines up into crystals as it leaves.

Edie's tip

Look at the crystals with a magnifying glass. Every needle has flat sides.
