How to make it

Safety

Pop balloon pieces get swallowed easily, so pick up any broken bits right away.

  1. Step 1: Cut the body
    1

    Cut the body

Cut a butterfly body from cardstock, about 4 in long.

  2. Step 2: Cut the wings
    2

    Cut the wings

Cut a pair of tissue paper wings, a little bigger than the body.

  3. Step 3: Glue only the middle
    3

    Glue only the middle

Glue the center of the wings to the body. Leave the wings loose.

  4. Step 4: Charge the balloon
    4

    Charge the balloon

Blow up the balloon. Rub it on your hair or a wool sweater for 10 seconds.

  5. Step 5: Make it flap
    5

    Make it flap

Hold the balloon 1 in above the wings. Watch them lift up toward it without touching.

  6. Step 6: Talk about why

    Talk about why

Rubbing moves tiny charged bits called electrons onto the balloon. The balloon pulls on the light tissue. Opposite charges pull together.

Edie's tip

This works best on dry days. Humid air makes static fade fast.
