How to make it

Safety

Salt dough is not food and the high salt can make dogs very sick, so keep raw dough and finished ornaments away from pets.

  1. Step 1: Mix the dough
    1

    Mix the dough

Stir the flour and salt in a bowl. Pour in the water a little at a time and squish it with your hands until it feels like play dough.

  2. Step 2: Roll it flat
    2

    Roll it flat

Roll the dough about 1/4 in thick on a floured counter. Thinner bakes faster and cracks less.

  3. Step 3: Cut your shapes
    3

    Cut your shapes

Press cookie cutters straight down and peel away the extra dough. Lay the shapes on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

  4. Step 4: Poke the hanging hole

    Poke the hanging hole

Push a straw through the top of each shape. Wiggle it a little so the hole stays open.

  5. Step 5: Bake them low and slow

    Bake them low and slow

Grown-up step: bake at 250°F for 2 to 3 hours, until they are hard and sound hollow when tapped. Let them cool on the pan.

  6. Step 6: Paint and hang

    Paint and hang

Paint the fronts, let them dry, then thread a ribbon through each hole. Write the year on the back with a marker.

Edie's tip

Pro move: brush on a coat of clear Mod Podge after painting. It keeps the ornaments from soaking up damp air and going soft.
