How to make it

Safety

Use a plastic jar with younger kids in case it slips.

  1. Step 1: Fill the jar
    1

    Fill the jar

Fill the jar about 3/4 full with water.

  2. Step 2: Add the soap
    2

    Add the soap

Add the dish soap, vinegar and glitter. Screw the lid on tight.

  3. Step 3: Swirl it
    3

    Swirl it

Hold the jar by the lid and spin it fast in small circles for 5 seconds.

  4. Step 4: Stop and look
    4

    Stop and look

Stop and hold it still. Watch the middle. A skinny funnel forms and the glitter spins around it.

  5. Step 5: Talk about why
    5

    Talk about why

Spinning water gets flung toward the sides of the jar. That leaves a low spot in the middle, which is the funnel. Real tornadoes spin the same way, with air instead of water.

Edie's tip

A tall, narrow jar shows a longer funnel than a short wide one.
