How to make it

Safety

Use shortening or sunflower butter instead of peanut butter if anyone in the family has a nut allergy.

  1. Step 1: Tie on the string
    1

    Tie on the string

Wrap string around the top of each cone, between the scales. Knot it with a long loop.

  2. Step 2: Pour the seed
    2

    Pour the seed

Fill a baking tray with birdseed. It catches spills too.

  3. Step 3: Spread the shortening
    3

    Spread the shortening

Smear shortening into the gaps with a butter knife. Kids love this messy part.

  4. Step 4: Roll in seed
    4

    Roll in seed

Roll the cone in the tray and press seed into the sticky spots.

  5. Step 5: Hang by a window

    Hang by a window

Tie it on a branch or hook you can see from your favorite chair.

Edie's tip

A bird book and a pair of light binoculars on the windowsill turn this into a daily activity for weeks.
