How to make it

Safety

Drilling shells makes fine dust, so let a helper do any drilling outside with a mask on.

  1. Step 1: Sort the shells
    1

    Sort the shells

Spread the shells on a towel. Sort them into 5 groups, one for each strand.

  2. Step 2: Cut the strands
    2

    Cut the strands

Cut 5 pieces of fishing line, each about 20 in long.

  3. Step 3: Tie on the first shell
    3

    Tie on the first shell

Knot the bottom shell onto a strand, then thread a bead above it.

  4. Step 4: Add the rest
    4

    Add the rest

Thread on more shells, tying a knot above each so they stay spaced.

  5. Step 5: Tie to the stick
    5

    Tie to the stick

Knot each strand along the driftwood, about 3 in apart.

  6. Step 6: Add a hanger
    6

    Add a hanger

Tie a cord to both ends of the stick and hang it up.

Edie's tip

Fishing line is hard to see and to knot. Thin colored cord is kinder to tired eyes and stiff fingers.
