How to make it

  1. Step 1: Stack the paper
    1

    Stack the paper

Lay 6 sheets of tissue paper on top of each other. Cut the stack into rectangles about the size of a postcard.

  2. Step 2: Fold like a fan
    2

    Fold like a fan

Fold one short end over about 1 in. Flip the stack and fold again. Keep going back and forth until it looks like a paper fan.

  3. Step 3: Twist on the stem
    3

    Twist on the stem

Wrap a pipe cleaner around the middle of the folded strip. Twist it twice so it holds.

  4. Step 4: Round the ends
    4

    Round the ends

Trim both ends of the fan into a curve. Rounded ends make softer petals.

  5. Step 5: Pull up the petals
    5

    Pull up the petals

Lift one sheet at a time toward the middle, gently. It'll look flat at first. By the 3rd layer it starts to look like a flower.

  6. Step 6: Fill the vase
    6

    Fill the vase

Make 5 to 8 flowers and set them in your jar. Bend the stems so the heads face different ways.

Edie's tip

If fingers are stiff, skip the folding and have someone pre-fold a few stacks. Fluffing the petals is the fun part anyway, and anyone can do it.
