How to make it

  1. Step 1: Tape down the card
    1

    Tape down the card

Tape all 4 edges of the paper to the table. You'll get a crisp white border when you peel it off.

  2. Step 2: Wet the paper
    2

    Wet the paper

Brush plain clean water over the whole card. It should shine but not puddle.

  3. Step 3: Drop in color
    3

    Drop in color

Touch a loaded brush to the wet paper. Watch the color bloom out on its own.

  4. Step 4: Add a second color
    4

    Add a second color

Drop in another color next to the first. Let them mix at the edges. Blue and pink make a sunset.

  5. Step 5: Lift with a towel
    5

    Lift with a towel

Dab a crumpled paper towel on the wet sky for soft clouds.

  6. Step 6: Dry and peel
    6

    Dry and peel

Let it dry 30 minutes. Peel the tape off slowly at an angle.

Edie's tip

A big brush is easier to hold than a small one, and it makes the kind of loose wash that looks best anyway.
