How to make it

Safety

Use a battery LED puck only, since clay and paint should never sit on a hot bulb.

  1. Step 1: Form the stem
    1

    Form the stem

Wrap the jar in plastic wrap. Cover it with a 1/4 in layer of clay, leaving the bottom open.

  2. Step 2: Shape the cap

    Shape the cap

Blow the balloon up to about 6 in. Drape a rolled clay sheet over the top half like a dome.

  3. Step 3: Add the gills
    3

    Add the gills

Press lines into the underside edge with the butter knife.

  4. Step 4: Dry in stages

Let both pieces dry 24 hours. Pop the balloon and slide the jar out.

  5. Step 5: Make light holes
    5

    Make light holes

Poke small dots through the cap before it's fully dry. Light will shine through them.

Let everything dry 2 more days. Sand, paint and seal.

  7. Step 7: Light it up

    Light it up

Set the puck light inside the stem and rest the cap on top.

Edie's tip

Keep the clay walls the same thickness. Thin spots crack while drying.
