How to make it

  1. Step 1: Draw the design

Draw on the jacket with wash-away marker, or print onto stick-and-stitch paper and press it on.

  2. Step 2: Hoop the spot
    2

    Hoop the spot

Clamp the area in the hoop so the fabric is tight like a drum.

  3. Step 3: Thread the needle
    3

    Thread the needle

Use 3 of the 6 floss strands. Knot the end.

  4. Step 4: Backstitch the lines
    4

    Backstitch the lines

Come up, go back half a stitch, then come up ahead. Keep stitches about 1/8 in.

  5. Step 5: Fill with satin stitch
    5

    Fill with satin stitch

For petals, lay straight stitches side by side to cover the shape.

  6. Step 6: Finish and rinse
    6

    Finish and rinse

Knot on the inside. Rinse the marker or paper away in cool water.

Edie's tip

Pick a spot with no thick seams, like the back yoke or a front panel.
