How to make it

Safety

Clamp the wood before drilling or sawing, and wear safety glasses.

  1. Step 1: Cut the parts
    1

    Cut the parts

Saw the base, dowel and top arm to size in the miter box.

  2. Step 2: Mark the centers
    2

    Mark the centers

Draw corner to corner on the base to find the middle. Mark the middle of the top arm too.

  3. Step 3: Drill the holes
    3

    Drill the holes

Grown-up step: drill a 3/4 in hole, 1/2 in deep, at each mark.

  4. Step 4: Sand everything
    4

    Sand everything

Sand with 120, then 220. Round the arm's edges so it won't dent the headband.

  5. Step 5: Glue it up
    5

    Glue it up

Glue the dowel into the base and the arm onto the dowel. Check it's straight and clamp overnight.

  6. Step 6: Oil and pad it
    6

    Oil and pad it

Rub on 2 coats of oil. Stick felt pads under the base.

Edie's tip

Hold a square against the dowel while the glue sets. Wonky stands lean forever.
